FOAM SUPPORT SHELLS

FOAM SUPPORT

We are now pleased to offer foam mother moulds for most of our latex mould range. This method has been developed, tested, and refined over several years, and we are confident in the process we now provide. Customer feedback has been extremely positive, with many customers returning to purchase additional foam supports.

While foam mother moulds are not as rigid as fibreglass cases, they offer an effective and far more affordable alternative. They are designed to hold the latex mould securely in shape during casting, in much the same way as fibreglass mother moulds without legs. To ensure stability, the foam support simply needs to be placed in sand or supported within a suitable bucket or container to keep it level and upright while casting.

With correct use, foam mother moulds will withstand many casting cycles and provide excellent value for money. This system is particularly well suited to hobby casters and small-scale makers who do not wish to invest significant sums in fibreglass mother moulds. For customers producing high volumes for retail or trade use, we recommend trying a foam mother mould first, although fibreglass cases may be better suited to continuous, heavy-duty production.

Our book, available through this website and on Amazon, includes step-by-step instructions on creating your own foam support using expanding foam. This method was learned and perfected over several years and, while relatively inexpensive, it does involve a learning curve and can be extremely messy. The book also covers all aspects of mould making and statue casting, making it a valuable resource for both beginners and experienced makers.

Foam Mother Moulds – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a foam mother mould?

A foam mother mould is a supportive outer casing designed to hold a latex mould securely in shape during casting. It supports the flexible latex mould in much the same way as a fibreglass mother mould, helping to maintain accuracy and stability while you pour or fill your casting material.

Are foam mother moulds as strong as fibreglass?

No. Foam mother moulds are not as rigid or durable as fibreglass cases. However, they are significantly more affordable and, with correct use, will last for many casting cycles. For most hobby and light-to-medium use, they provide excellent support and value for money.

Who are foam mother moulds best suited for?

Foam mother moulds are ideal for:

  • Hobby casters

  • Small-scale makers

  • Customers who want a lower-cost alternative to fibreglass

For high-volume or continuous trade production, fibreglass mother moulds are generally better suited. We recommend trying a foam version first if you are unsure.

Do foam mother moulds need additional support?

Yes. Foam mother moulds should be supported to keep them level and upright during casting. This can be done by placing them in sand or inside a suitable bucket or container. This is similar to using fibreglass mother moulds without legs.

How long do foam mother moulds last?

When used correctly and cared for properly, foam mother moulds will last for many uses. Their lifespan depends on frequency of use, handling, and the type of casting materials used.

Are foam mother moulds available for all latex moulds?

Foam mother moulds are available for most of our latex mould range. If you are unsure whether a particular mould can be supplied with a foam support, please contact us before ordering and we will be happy to advise.

Can I make my own foam mother mould?

Yes. Our book, available through this website and on Amazon, provides step-by-step instructions on making your own foam support using expanding foam. While the method is relatively inexpensive, it does involve a learning curve and can be extremely messy. The process was developed and refined over several years.

Does your book cover more than just foam supports?

Yes. The book covers all key aspects of latex mould making and statue casting, making it a useful guide for both beginners and experienced makers.

What if I’m unsure which option is right for me?

If you’re unsure whether a foam or fibreglass mother mould is best for your needs, please get in touch. We’re always happy to offer advice based on your casting method, experience level, and intended use.
